#8 The Sign-Language Game

Supplies You Will Need:
1. A sign-language chart
2. A couple of different sentences that each partner group has to communicate written on notecards.

Directions to the game:
In this game you will have everyone paired up with a partner. You will be sitting across the table from your partner. At this station no one can use their voice they most talk by using sign language. Some people will know a little and some people might not know any sign language at all and that is fine because if you do not know something in sign language you will look at the cart to see how to say something in sign language. They will also have a few sentences the will have to say to eachother in sign language. You will each get a paper with sentences on. If you do not know how to say things in sign language go up and look at the cart to say how to say things in sign language.

Do this game for about 10 minutes and then have a five minute discussion.

What to watch for:Make sure no one talks at this game with their mouth. Make sure that they only talk in Sign Language

#7 The Racing Game

Supplies You Will Need:
1. Toys with wheels like cars or trains
2. A box to put all the toys in
3. Something to tie their legs together with (e.g. rope)


Set-Up:
This game will start at the bottom of a ramp, with a starting line at the end of the ramp and a line were the race ends.

Directions: You probably will have to take turns depending on how wide the ramp is and how many people are in the group. When everyone gets to the station you will have them tie their legs together. When they do the game you will have them start at the end of a ramp. You will explain to everyone that they will need to take turns because there will probably not be enough room for everyone to do this at the same time. You will explain to everyone that when they do this and they start the race the first thing they will have to do is reach in the box and get out a toy but when you get your toy you can not stand up or it would defeat the purpose of the game. After you get a toy you will put the wheels on the floor and then have to scoot yourself on the floor while you scoot your toy on the floor and you only will have so much time depending on how many people are in the group. Whoever gets across the ending point will get a piece of candy.

After you have done this you will have a discussion to see if anyone knows what rare disability this represents.

Disabilities This Game Represents: a rare disability called Mermaid Syndrome and Paraplegia.

#6 The Word Game

What Supplies You Will Need:
1. Braille Alphabets
2. Bandanas
3. Pencils
4. A list of easy words in print that they have to write in braille
5. A list of easy words in Braille that they have to write in print
6. Raised line paper

Directions:
When everyone comes to this game you will have everyone sit around a table. When they are all sitting around the and are being quiet you can start explaining what they will be doing at the station. At this station you will give everyone a Braille alphabet, a bandanna, a list of Braille words to try to interpret in Braille on raised line paper and then everyone will also need a pencil. For the first 5 minutes you will have everyone study the Braille alphabet. After the five minutes they will put their bandanna on and after that they will have to feel around for the list of words, the pencil and the raised line paper. When you find them you will read the word in Braille and then write on the raised Line paper in print what it says in Braille.

#5 The Grocery Game

Supplies You Will Need:
1. Three different List of Groceries
2. Bandannas
3. Fake Money
4. Two different tables, one to set the Groceries on, and then for one of the tables you will use it as a checkout.
5. Bandanas

What someone will need to play:
A cashier

Directions For The Grocery Game:
When the group comes to The Grocery Game you will pair people up with a parner. You and your partner will get one bandana and then one of the people will tie a bandana around your head so that it covers up your eyes then your partner will be guiding you around. You and your partner will be handed a list of things to buy and you also will be handed some fake money. When you have both your partner will help you get what groceries you need and then you will go pay the cashier with your fake money. After one person has done that you will take off the blind fold and hand it to your partner and tye it around your eyes and the other person will start guiding and you will do the same thing.

Where you will start when everyone comes to The Grocery Game:
Everyone will start at the bottom of the stairs and with their partner they will guide you up the stairs.

When you hand out the materials:
You hand the material out before the partner leads you up the stairs.

What Disability The Grocery Game represents: Blindness

You should do the game for about 10 Minutes then have a 5 minute discussion

#4 The Writing Game

Supplies you will need:
1. Raised line paper
2. Splints
3. Pencils
4. Bandannas
5. Envelopes

Directions for The Writing Game:
When everyone comes to The Writing Game you will have people sit down around the table. When everyone is seated around the table and quiet you can start telling them what they will be doing at The Writing Game. At the writing game you will tell people that they will probably have to take turns because there will probably not be enough of everything for everone to do it at the same time. The first thing you will do is hand the pairs of hand splints out and have them put one on each hand. After everyone has the hand spints on you will hand everyone a bandana and tie it around their head so that it covers their eyes. After everyone has done that you will hand them an envelope, when they have the envelope you will have them in the left hand corner write their first and last name, then underneath write their address and zip code. After they have done that have them feel for the middle of the envelope and put a first and last name, address and zip code on the envelope. After everyone is done give them a piece of raised line paper and have them write a short letter to that person.

Time: after 10 minutes start a 5 minute discussion.

Disabilities the Writing Game Represents: Intention Hand Tremors and Blindness.

Tips when you are doing this: the easiest way not to loose their place is to put your finger at the end of each letter.

Things to watch out for:
Make sure no one can peak through their bandanna and make sure the bandanna is snug tight but not too tight.

#3 The Mitt Game

Supplies You Will Need
1. Oven Mitts
2. Thread
3. Needles
4. Starbursts

Directions for The Mitt Game
At The Mitt Game you will have to demonstrate what they will be doing. You will tell them that they will need a oven mitt on each hand and then with the oven mitts on they will have to try to open a starburst and if you get it open you can eat the piece of starburst, if they get that done they will give you a needle and some thred and you have to try to thred the needle with the oven mitts on.

After they have done the games at the statshion have a 5 minute discussion.

#2 The Mirror Game

Supplies You Will Need:
1. Mirrors that can stand up
2. Two different Mazes (one has to be harder then the other)
3. Lined paper
4. Pencils
5. A pencil sharpener in case a lot of the pencels break.

Rules for The Mirror Game:
1. You have to look through The Mirror while you are writing.
2. You can not look down at your paper when you are writing.

Directions for The Mirror Game
When everyone comes to this station have them sit down on a chair by the table and then when everyone is quiet you can start explaining what they will be doing at The Mirror Game station. You will tell everone that when they get a mirror to stand the mirror up on the table then they will be given a lined piece of paper and have to look through the mirror and write their full name. After they are done writing there full name through the mirror you will hand them the 1st maze and they have to do that looking through the mirror, and if they get that done you will give them the harder maze.

When there is just 5 minutes left you will start the discussion.

#1 The Basketball Game

Supplies That You Will Need:
1. A basketball pump to make sure that all the basketballs are pumped up
2. Enough basketballs for the group
3. Writing utensils
4. You will need a sheet of math problems with some addition problems, subtraction problems, multiplication problems and division problems.
5. Clip boards
**Make sure you will have enough copies of the sheet of math problems

Facilitation: Each time people change stations you will need to put new math problem paper on the clip board that are not used. Make sure that also when they come to the station that they do not just grab a basketball.

Directions for The Basketball Game
When people come to The Basketball Stastion you will have everyone sit down on the floor and when everyone is quiet you can start the demonstration. When you start esplaining what they are going to be doing you will show them while you explain it. When you start explaining tell everyone they will be getting a basketball and when you get a basketball and then sit on the basketball. After you have done that you will put both feet straight out, after you do that you will cross 1 leg over the other leg. Then after everyone is on the basketballs with their legs straight out and crossed you will hand everyone a clip board with a sheet of math problems on the clip board and a utensil to write with and they will have to do math problems on the basketball well trying to ballence yourself on the basketball. If during the 10 minutes you fall off the basketball it is fine you just will have to get back on and try it again.

What you need to watch out for while people are playing: Make sure they are not using one of their hands and the floor to help balance themselves because it would defeat the purpose of The Basketball Game.

After you are done with The Basketball Game and have 5 Minutes left you will do the discussion questions.

3. The Mitt Game (Cerebral Palsy, Arthritis)
4. The Writing Game (Blindness, Hand Tremors)

7. The Racing Game (Mermaid Syndrome, Paraplegia)

Time Required: Total 15 minutes. Each game requires approximately 10 minutes, and then after you are done with the game you will have a 5 minute discussion.

Facilitation: What you will need one person to do is to keep track of the time so when 10 minutes are up you need to tell them when to start the 5 minute discussion.
You also will need 1 to 2 people running each station.

1. What was frustating about this game? Why?
2. What was enjoyable about this game? Why?
3. Did you learn anything new?
4. Does anyone know what kind of disability or disabilities the game represents?
(If no one can not figure out what kind of disability or disabilities the game represents tell them.)
5. Discuss this disabilities and the challenges people with it might face on a daily basis.
6. What could we do as a society to make public spaces and processes more accomodating for people living with these disabilities?

The Disability Games were Created by Anne Moler originally for use in the SEED (Students Educating Each other About Discrimination) peer-education program in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Why We Made The Disability Game Website
The main reason why we made The Disability Game website is because in the world a lot of people with disabilities are discriminated by people without disabilities because they have not learned how to treat people who have disabilities. We want to make these games widely available for anyone to use so that people will be able to learn how not to discriminate.

On Helping and Friendship

These games were made to teach people without disabilities that it is not OK to discriminate against someone with a disability, but it IS ok to be their friend and get to know them and ask them questions and if you see them having a hard time you can offer help. Just remember that we are all different on the outside but inside we are all equal and we all deserve to be treated equally.


How to help people if you see someone with a disability struggling:

If you see someone struggling and you know them you can just go over and say hi to them and ask them would you like some help and if they say yes then ask how may I help you and they can tell you how to help but if they say no thank you I want to try things myself respect what they say.

Steps for Friendship:
1. introduce yourself 2. ask them their name 3. talk to them to get to know them 4. be willing to be their friends because unless you get to know them you will never know how nice that person can be, and, last but not least, 5. if you saw the person with disability struggling you can ask them if they are having trouble and if they say yes you can ask is there any way I can help you and if so how and then you can help them with what they need but if they say that they do not want your help they will say no thank you and just respect what they say and if they want to keep trying themselves let them and just walk away knowing you did the right thing.

Always remember that when you talk to people with disabilities we are all need different kinds of help and people without disabilities always need help once in a while so all of us should be willing to help one another.
